Before you apply to Court regarding children or the finances of a relationship, in most cases you have to consider Mediation first, by attending a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM), to which the other party is invited by me. You show the Court that you have done this by attaching a completed FM1 form to your application.

The MIAM is:

A fixed cost of £100 including VAT

Free if you qualify for legal aid

Free if you are not the party requesting the meeting

One hour

Confidential

Separate or with the other party (up to you)

To talk about your family issues

To talk about the ways your issues can be dealt with:
• Mediation
• Collaborative Law
• Solicitor Negotiation
• Court Proceedings

To identify if Mediation is suitable

To give you information on the legal process

To give you information on my costs

To check if you qualify for legal aid (public funding)

At the end of the MIAM I will hand you both:

A Personal Action Plan covering:
• The issues we have discussed
• Your next steps if you want to try Mediation
• The information I have given you

A signed FM1 where appropriate

There is no separate charge for completing the form FM1.
